Talk about your experience on Sunday morning.

  • How did God speak to you during worship and/or teaching this week?
  • What have you been reflecting on and/or praying about in response to this week’s service?

Take some time to unpack Sunday’s message.

  • Do you have a favourite commercial? What is it? Why is it your favourite?
  • What is consumerism? How would you define it? How has it shaped the world that we live in?
  • What are some of the dangers of consumerism and materialism?  Emotionally? Spiritually? Relationally?
  • Is it wrong to want and to have nice things? Why or why not? (Read Ecclesiastes 5:19 and 1 Timothy 6:17)
    • What is the difference between “living to consume” and “consuming to live”?
  • Consumerism in relationships cause us to use people. Have you ever felt used by somebody? What happened? What did it feel like?
    • What are some specific examples of this kind of consumerism (using people) in relationships?
    • In a friendship? In a marriage? In a church?  In other ways?
  • What are some ways that you have used people?
  • How does understanding that “God is a God of covenant” have the potential to change the way we approach our relationships? Why?
  • What does it mean to be a “covenant people”?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-7. How is this description of love so very different from consumerism’s version of love?
    • What does it look like to live into a 1 Corinthians kind of love?
  • What are some next steps for you coming out of this week’s teaching and discussion?
