- Do you have a favourite commercial? What is it? Why is it your favourite?
- What is consumerism? How would you define it? How has it shaped the world that we live in?
- What are some of the dangers of consumerism and materialism? Emotionally? Spiritually? Relationally?
- Is it wrong to want and to have nice things? Why or why not? (Read Ecclesiastes 5:19 and 1 Timothy 6:17)
- What is the difference between “living to consume” and “consuming to live”?
- Consumerism in relationships cause us to use people. Have you ever felt used by somebody? What happened? What did it feel like?
- What are some specific examples of this kind of consumerism (using people) in relationships?
- In a friendship? In a marriage? In a church? In other ways?
- What are some ways that you have used people?
- How does understanding that “God is a God of covenant” have the potential to change the way we approach our relationships? Why?
- What does it mean to be a “covenant people”?
- Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-7. How is this description of love so very different from consumerism’s version of love?
