These Discussion Questions are coming out of Sunday March 2nd’s message “Know Your Enemy” from our “Deliver Us From Evil” sermon series. They are intended to be used in Home Churches/Small Groups. Feel free to use as many or as few of these questions as is helpful for your group.

  • Jeff talked about how “No one is more aware of the reality of war than those who are fighting in it.” What are the implications of this idea in light of Paul’s words in Ephesians 6:12?
  • A lot of people have a pretty skewed idea of ‘The Devil.’ How would you describe him? What are these ideas based on for you?
  • CS Lewis wrote in “The Screwtape Letters” that, “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other (CS Lewis says) is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”  What are the dangers of either extreme?
  • Jeff talked through 7 different Biblical names/titles for the enemy:
    • The Satan (1 Chr 21:2, Job 1& 2, Rev 12:10)
      • “The Adversary” and “The Accuser”
    • The Devil (1 Pt 5:8-9, 1 Jn 3:8)
      • “The Slanderer”
    • Lucifer (Is 14:12)
      • “Bearer of Light”
    • The Evil One (Matt 6:13, 13:19, Jn 17:15)
      • The source of all that is evil
    • The Tempter (Matt 4:1)
      • The one who tempts us to sin
    • The Deceiver – The Father of Lies (Jn 8:44)
      • Lies are his default language
    • The Ruler – The god of this Age (Jn 12:31, 14:30, 16:11, 2 Cor 4:4)
      • The force behind much of what happens in our world today
  • Which of these names/titles for the enemy stand out to you the most? Why?
    • What do these names reveal to us about the strategies of the devil both in our lives and in our world today?
    • Why is it so important to be aware of these strategies? What could happen to us in our ignorance?
  • Read Colossians 2:13-15.
    • What does this passage reveal to us about what Christ accomplished on the cross in our battle ‘against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world’?
    • If Satan is a defeated foe, why is he still so dangerous today?

Spend some time in prayer, asking God to fill you with the power of the Spirit so that you can stand firm in the Lord and His mighty power.
