Coming out of Sunday January 17th’s teaching, “RESET: Becoming Like Jesus”, spend some time in prayerful reflection and dialogue with your Home Church/Friends/Family around any combination of these questions:
Read Matthew 7:24-27 , John 14:15 & 23-24 before starting. Pray and ask God to speak.
- According to Jesus in Matthew 7:24-27, what makes a person “wise” and “foolish”? What’s significant about this teaching, and it’s placement at the end of “The Sermon on the Mount”?
- What makes “obedience to Jesus” so important in a follower of Jesus’ life? What is Jesus main point in the John 14 verses? Discuss.
- Why is it important that “Doing What Jesus Said” flow out of Goal #1 of “Being with Jesus” and Goal #2 of “Becoming Like Jesus”? What’s the danger in getting this out of order?
- On Sunday, Jeff said that “The Way of Jesus is the Best Way to Live Our Lives.” How is it the “best way” (reflect on the list below if helpful)? What are some tensions/challenges that we can sometimes feel about “Doing What Jesus Said” that can make it difficult to truly believe this?
- Why do you think Christians sometimes treat “Doing What Jesus Said” as optional?
- Spend some time reflecting on some potential reasons (that Jeff shared on Sunday) for this:
- 1. “It’s not practical.”
- What are some examples of this? (of Jesus’ teaching sometimes being considered ‘impractical’)
- What are some specific ways we try to justify our actions (or lack of actions)?
- 2. “It’s not necessary.”
- Why is it that some Christians seem to believe that all that matters is “believing the right things” and making sure you go to heaven when you die?
- What’s so dangerous about this kind of Christianity?
- 3. “We don’t want to.”
- What can we do when we don’t want to do what Jesus said (or when we are operating out of a place of wounding and can’t do what Jesus said)?
- 1. “It’s not practical.”
- Spend some time reflecting on the list below from The Sermon on the Mount. Which one(s) do you sense the Holy Spirit nudging you to work on in 2021? What might this look like for you?
- Spend some time in prayer together s a group, inviting the Holy Spirit to empower us to “Do What Jesus Said”.
