Coming out of Sunday March 21’s teaching “Letting Go of Shame”, spend some time in prayerful reflection and dialogue with your Home Church/Friends/Family around any combination of these questions:

Read Romans 8:1-2 before starting. Pray and ask God to speak.

  • How did God speak to you on Sunday through the message, “Letting Go of Shame”?
  • Brene Brown defined Shame like this: “Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging.” What makes shame such a powerful, negative emotion in our lives? How does it impact our relationships (with God and others)?
  • Jeff shared some of the lies that shame can speak into our lives. Which one(s) feel most relevant to you? Why?
    • I am defective
    • I am dirty
    • I am incompetent
    • I am unwanted
    • I am bad
    • I am ugly
    • I am nothing
  • How has this lie shaped the way you think about yourself, God and other? Can you think of some specific ways that this lie  has impacted your life and your relationships?
  • How does the Gospel set us free from the power of shame and condemnation? (Reflect back to Romans 8:1-2) What does it look like to walk in freedom from our shame?
  • Jeff also shared the truth of who we are in Christ (in contrast with the shame list). Which one(s) feel most relevant to you? Why?
    • I am a masterpiece (Eph 2:10)
    • I am clean (Heb 10:10)
    • I am gifted (Rom 12:6)
    • I am accepted (Col 1:22)
    • I am perfect (Heb 10:14)
    • I am beautiful (Ps 139:13)
    • I am loved (1 John 3:1)
  • How is this truth shaping the way you think about yourself, God and other? What difference does believing this truth make in your life? What do you need to do to keep reminding yourself of this truth?
  • Read Hebrews 12:2. What does this verse reveal to us about the impact the Gospel has on shame?
  • Spend some time in prayer together as a group, praying through the “Truth Says” list.
